9/11 Rattle the Runway Motorcycle Ride – Pre-party and Bike Show

The Rattle the Runway motorcycle ride indirectly follows the path of Flight 77. That airliner was the one that that the terrorist flew into the Pentagon on 9/11. Proceeds from the event go to the Pentagon Memorial fund. More on that in the next post.

This year, Patriot Harley Davidson held a pre-ride party at their location in Fairfax, VA. The event had a band, food trucks, a bike show and all around good time. I was a bit disappointed in the turn out but it was a major holiday weekend and I don’t think it was well publicized.

My Army Bike won 1^st place in its category (Best Harley). The prize was a $100 gift certificate from the dealership. As I don’t get by this way very often I thought it best to spend the money while I was there. My wife got a nice new shirt and I now have a new pocket knife, the total came to $99.60. I guess that is about as close to $100 as I could get.

Motorcycle and Car Show

1st Place Custom, 3rd Place Dresser (yup dresser)

The wife and I went to a motorcycle and car show this past weekend. The Tradesmen Motorcycle Club hosted the event to raise money for the Cystic Fibroses Foundation. The show itself was in rural Maryland, you would never know we were 50 miles or so from downtown Washington, DC due to all the countryside we saw. We road through miles of farmland when “SHA’ZAM” a small strip mall appeared in the community of Monrovia, MD.

On the ride out the weather was great but that was hiding the fact that the temp was going to be in the upper 90s… and boy did it! We drank a lot of water during the day and as much as we like the show we were looking forward to the ride home and cool showers!

As for the show itself there were about 25 cars and about 20 motorcycles on display. The one thing that surprised me the most was…what is up with Batman? There were two Batman themed Camaro’s one of which had a matching motorcycle.

As you can tell from the pictures below there were some really nice cars and bikes in attendance. The wife and I both favorite and voted for the same vehicles, in particular we loved the late 1960s Pontiac Grand Prix Convertible and the Chevy El Camino.

We also met a guy taking a leap into the motorcycle industry and starting his own shop. He is creating his company, “Sick Sledz”, and is hoping to open it in this part of Maryland in the near future… we wish him luck!

We did quite well in the contest part of the bike show! We won two trophies for the Army bike. The first trophy kind of surprised us, 3^rd place in the “Dresser” category! That had to be people selecting the wrong spot on the voting form or not knowing what a dresser really looks like.. oh well.

Our bike did take 1^st place in the custom motorcycle category. We have done well in the few shows we have presented and we have not got around to finishing it yet. There are a few more things we want to do to call it finished!

Motorcycle Show: Finish the Race Car and Bike Show

This past weekend I rode my “Army Motorcycle” to the “Finish the Race Ministries” car and bike show. The show was held in the parking lot of the Calvary Temple Church in Sterling, Virginia. The day was wonderful for a car and motorcycle show! Warm and sunny with a bit of a breeze. But as I used the remains of last year’s sun block I did get a mild sunburn hanging out in the parking lot.

There was over 100 cars and at least 35 bikes entered in the show. The cars ranged from the hopped up, rusty patina shop trucks to Bentley’s. There were a lot of Corvettes ranging from the 1950s to the new Stingray’s. And there was everything in between including a Studebaker pickup, something I have never seen before.

In the bike category there was also a large gamut of entries. Sport bikes, a couple of vintage bikes, third generation Indians, choppers and of course Harley Davidson’s. All the bikes in the show were nice and well keep motorcycles. The winners were selected by judges and attendees of the show and I was fortunate to win the People’s Choice award for the show!

Motorcycle Ride: Memorial Day Weekend Part Deux … Freedom Fest

1st Place

After leaving Washington HD I rode over to Hardcore Choppers for their Freedom Fest. The proceeds for this event were to benefit Able Forces.

They had multiple bands all day including Sam Tate and Gypsy Sons. There were a several vendors, a bike show (which I entered) and the Fairfax County Police motor patrol drill team among other things.

One of the funnier items occurred when the police were giving a demonstration of how to pick up fallen bike. When they asked for volunteers to try picking up the bike a 70+ year old lady jumped out to give it a go! Check out the video Old Lady picks up police motorcycle!

As for the bike show I took first place in my class!

September Motorcycle Events in York, PA

There are a couple of bike events taking place in York this month.

First is the Harley Davidson York Vehicle Operations Open House the 19^th-21^st. The York plant assembles the Softail, Touring, CVO and Trike motorcycles and the open house allow you to conduct a self-escorted tour of the operations. You can see the bikes being birthed (the VIN # applied to the frame) to rolling out the door. The plant open house is different from the Steel Toe Tour (which I have not done) in that there is no charge, it is unescorted and you do not get the swag.

I visited the open house two years ago and it was a cool event. In addition to the walk through of the plant there were demo bikes available to ride and a bunch of the nearby dealerships had setup merchandise tents on the plant’s grounds. I am considering going again this year. The open house has been a “Pin Stop” for HOG members in the past.

The other event is the White Rose Thunder Motorcycle Event. The event has bike shows, vendors, stunt teams, motorcycle racing, a bike night, concerts, swap meet and many other activities. I have never attended this event, if you are interested take a look at the website.

Bike Show at Waugh HD

Debbie and I rode to Waugh Harley Davidson in Orange, VA to participate in their 21^st Annual “Big Damn Bike Show”! The ride to the dealership was nearly eighty miles and about ninety minutes long, passing through some of Virginia’s best farm and country land. Getting to and from the show we traveled on the James Madison Highway, the 29^th Infantry Division Memorial Highway, the Seminole Trail, and the Zachary Tyler Highway.

We entered our bike, along with about 300 or so other bikes, into the show. There were another 600 to 1000 additional bikes lining the streets around the dealership which made this a bike watchers paradise. Waugh Harley Davidson, it turns out, has its own attached park called “Legends Park”, because of the tents erected in front of it I could not get a good picture of the park sign. The HOG (Harley Owners Group) club for this dealership has a sweet setup!

In addition to the bike show there were more than a dozen vendors and displays, including the ever present bikini bike wash! One of the more interesting displays was by a limo company; they had a stretched Harley Davidson Ford F250 Pickup with bubble bath in the truck bed. It was quite amusing each time a bunch of soap bubble would come floating across the park.

Musical entertainment was provided by the Zen Daddy band. They covered most of the hits from the 80’s, 90’s, and the 00’s (is 00 the right way to do that?). Debbie and I thought the band did a fine job. Mr. Waugh himself came out and played a couple tunes on the harmonica, for “older” gentlemen I was quite impressed with this talent and lung capacity. Our bike finished second in our class and after looking at the winner I have some clear directions on what do for next time. Of course that means more chrome!
