Motorcycle TV: Pure Evil The Review

pure-evel-dl-668x375Last night I watched the Discovery Channel’s premiers of “Pure Evil”.  This was supposed to be about Evil Knievel “behind the scenes”.  I did not think much of the show.

It was interesting to hear some of the “insider” stories regarding Evil. About how he drove his own public relations campaign, about his ego, and about the Snake River Canyon jump.  But, I do not think I learned anything new or titillating about his life.

Also, while it has been a long time since I have seen it, I think a lot of the “cut scenes” were from a movie about Evil Knievel that came out years ago.  Overall, I feel this effort was well below Discovery’s normal high caliber programing.

Liberty Vintage Motorcycles

This motorcycle show follows the happenings swirling around Philadelphia’s Liberty Vintage Motorcycles and its owner Adam Kramer. It completed its first (and I hope not last) season recently.  I was only able to catch the last couple of shows but it was enjoyable, even though it follows the same “got to get it done, tight deadline” plot lines as the others.

What made me pay attention to this show is that the tight deadlines are real, not so much for getting the bike to the customer but to pay the electric bill and Adam’s few employees.  You call easily tell that Adam is a vintage bike lover first and a businessman second (maybe third).

Another item to like, even though my first love are Harley Davidson’s, it is fun to watch old Honda’s and other bikes cleaned up and sent to good home!

Philly Throttle appears (did appear) on the Discovery Channel.  I found nothing that indicated it has been renewed for a second season, or that it has been cancelled.  I personally hope that there is another season for Philly Throttle.  You can see some of the show on Discovery’s website, check it out!

Convert your ride into a Tron Light Bike!

Well not really, but you can make your bike look like Light Bike at night with the Lunasee Motorcycle Wheel Lights. I do not have this accessory but the concept is intriguing and cool.

For about $200 (US) you can add the luminescent tape and LED activation light to your bike and get that Tron affect. Lunasee advertises that you will be seen sooner because of the unique lighting. If it works as claimed I would agree as most motorcycles have little to no lighting when looked at from the side.

Motorcycle TV: WE’RE THE FUGAWIS

There has been several motorcycle related TV shows here in the US lately.  The most recent is “The History Channel’s WE’RE THE FUGAWIS”.

I discovered this show a few weeks ago and it is reasonably entertaining.  These guys are not a gang but a Motorcycle Club of friends.  History Channel says this about the show:

“Meet the Fugawis: an upstate New York motorcycle club whose members live lifewerethefugawis_abouttheseries_2-E with a freedom and fraternity that many guys can only dream of. In an age when everyone is seeking to strike the perfect work-life balance, this group of bikers has somehow figured it out. Members of the club include expert builders, plumbers, electricians and general contractors, so when they’re not out in the wind on the open road they’re tackling construction projects of all shapes and sizes to earn a living”.

Not sure what this says about me but the Fugawis’ are the type of guys that I could hang out with.  I give this show a 4 out 5!

Charging My Motorcycle Battery

Recently I have had battery issues on my Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic.  The battery does not hold a charge for more than one day of nonuse.

To connect my charger, I have to remove both seats and attach the clamps to the battery.  As often as not the clamps would slip off and the battery fails to charge.

Harley has Battery Charging Harness with LED Charge Indicator for $14.95 (that’s right not HD (hundred dollar)).  This product not only lets me charge or maintain the battery but flashes a red LED when it reaches a level that it requires charging. I bought the device at Frederick Harley Davidson.

Installation was straight forward: remove the seats, attach the leads to the battery, tuck in the fuse, zip tie the lead to the frame and put the seats back on.  After I have used this for a while I will let you know what I think of product.

Saddlebag Lighting

As noted in a previous post, we had some work done on the Ultra Classic Limited. Today I will cover and review the Air Wing Saddlebag Lid Rail LED Light Kit (Part Number 68388-10) we had installed.

I am a big proponent of lighting up my rear end (the bike that is).  This would not have been the first lighting change the rear I would have made but Frederick Harley Davidson had a good deal on for lights.

When we bought the bike the Air Wing Saddlebag Rails were already installed.  The rails look good and prevent some of the normal scuffing that occurs when folks mount and dismount the bike.  These lights fit under the little “wing” are almost invisible with the smoke lens (red is also available). 

The lights function as supplemental running and brake lights only and that is why I am giving the lights a  4 out of 5 review.  I can only assume that there is not enough room in the rail tubes to add the turn signal function, but that would have been a great additional feature and earned a 5th star.

Fairing Mounted Mirrors

Mirror with LED Turn Indicators

The first item is the fairing mounted mirrors.  We purchased this because I was having issues seeing out of the standard mirrors. I am 5’8″ and sit well in OEM saddle but I needed to lean left or right to get a clear view of what was behind us. Because of that I have not been comfortable with knowing what was going on behind me.  I have been associated with the fairing mounted mirrors on the Street Glide and I did not have a problem using that type of mirror. So I had the standard mirrors replaced with the fairing mounted type with illuminated chrome covers (Part Number 92600-10).  The illumination provided is amber LED running lights which also function as another turn signal indicator.

So far so good, we had the 115 mile ride this past weekend during which I was continuously doing the minor adjustments one does with mirrors.  I have the right mirror just where I want it but the left one still needs tweaked, but I am sure I will get it right soon.

My early review of this product would be 4 out 5.  I would have liked the LEDs to be a bit larger in order to be even more visible.
