I have to admit that based on the commercials, I did not have high hopes for the Biker Battleground Phoenix Motorcycle TV show from the History Channel.  I was afraid it was going to a reality soap opera more focused on drama and conflict then the bikes and the craftsmanship.

The first episode lived up to my low expectations with lots of drama and not much motorcycle.  The second show was much much better, focusing on a couple of bikes being built for the Daytona Rally and the AZZkickers working up products for the new Indian motorcycles.  Episode two’s drama revolved around VooDoo’s missing a big delivery date, pranks and Paul Yaffe’s challenge to the other shops to a build off, not to bad!

This show, with episode two is a good combination of OCC and Biker Build Off.  I like it

For me, the difference between the two shows was as the difference between night and day.  I can only hope that they continue along the lines of the second show here on out.

I am with holding the issue of stars right now as Biker Battleground Phoenix could easily slide back into the form it took for the premier show.  That would be a one star, while riding along the lines of the second show would be a 4 or 5 star award.

History Channels newest motorcycle related TV show, Biker Battleground Phoenix, premiers 10PM (EST) on the 1st of July.

I wrote a post earlier (read it here) about how I hoped this was not a “Devils Ride” version of build show. After watching more of the commercials, I still hope this is not a builder version of that show.

The History Channel now has a website for their new series.  The Biker Battleground Phoenix website does not yet have much but, there is a “Sneak Peak” video available.

According to the site the show is about….

“Phoenix, Arizona—where the country’s top motorcycle builders compete day and night. It’s a dog-eat-dog world, where buyers are willing to pay upwards of $150,000 for a fully-customized, one-of-a-kind ride. Biker Battleground Phoenix follows the temperamental and talented bad boys of the bike business. In their world, showcases are for pride and bragging rights, competition is cutthroat and money talks. When egos and passion collide, the aftershocks echo across town.

They don’t follow trends–they set them. No tactic is off limits and no move is too corrupt. From stealing ideas and poaching employees to public bashing on social media, these guys will do whatever it takes to give themselves and their shops the ultimate edge over the rest.”

After reading this I hope this is not a “The Devil’s Ride” show for builders!

After leaving Washington HD I rode over to Hardcore Choppers for their Freedom Fest. The proceeds for this event were to benefit Able Forces.

They had multiple bands all day including Sam Tate and Gypsy Sons. There were a several vendors, a bike show (which I entered) and the Fairfax County Police motor patrol drill team among other things.

One of the funnier items occurred when the police were giving a demonstration of how to pick up fallen bike. When they asked for volunteers to try picking up the bike a 70+ year old lady jumped out to give it a go! Check out the video Old Lady picks up police motorcycle!

As for the bike show I took first place in my class!

Motorcycle TV: #BikerLive Review … #Twitter TV

I have watched the first two episodes of the newest motorcycle show and it’s the same but different.

I addition to voting by twitter you are also watching in twitter mode!  The show is attempting to show you the builds of three teams via for the title of this week’s champion.  Attempting to show three builds plus the lead in and the results is a whorl wind of 140 second clips.  Now to be honest I am sure each shot is more than 140 seconds but man are they short.  You really don’t get to see a lot of the bike during the build and not much of the completed motorcycle. 

I held off my voting during the first week to see the bikes either complete or close to it and missed my chance to vote (I would have voted for Harlot)!  The second week I voted for Backyard Bagger, who lost….maybe I should vote for the team I don’t want to win.

All in all I think it is an OK show, and given some time to work the kinks out, I think it will be a good show.  Just from the 1st to the 2nd show you can see some improvement. By the time they reach the end of the season I think it will be much better and if it returns for a second run I expect great things. If I were to give one recommendation….show the completed bikes a bit more before you close voting!

I am going to give it 4 out 5 stars because I think they will get a lot better as they progress.

Motorcycle TV: The Devils Ride

Well “The Devils Ride” is coming back to Discovery channel beginning February 3rd.  This is the third season for the show.

I have not reviewed The Devils Ride in the past because I did not think it was going to make back on the air. But now that it is here is what I think.

It is a reality show that feels way too scripted with “characters” that are  forced.  These guys are supposedly real bikers in a real club but it just feels off, not that I have ever been in a MC.

Sometimes I get a feeling that some of the characters are not riding the bikes because I can’t see their faces when they are riding.  This pulls it even further from the “reality” concept.

If they are trying to make it a soap opera for men, SOA it is not.

I really appreciate Discovery Channel putting a lot of motorcycle related content on their networks, but, in my opinion, this is the weakest of all their bike related shows.  I give it 2 out of 5 stars.

My Customized Graduation Gift (hint it is a motorcycle)

As I have noted in other posts I am a retired soldier.  I served 25 years and when I retired in 2008 that was more than half my life, longer than I have been married and longer then I lived with my parents…..wow that makes me fill old.

So, as a graduation from the Army gift to ourselves Debbi and I bought a brand new Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. I chose this bike because I knew what I wanted to do with it and its 1940/50’s look was a great starting point!

What I wanted was a bike I could customize to be a tribute for the work that I had accomplished as well as a homage for all those soldiers that had come before me. I wanted a bike that I could stylize as a WWII Harley.

The bike is no trailer queen or show only bike.  We have put over 28,000 miles on the Heritage and it would have been closer to 35K had we not bought a Ultra Classic Limited early this year (we put nearly 6K on that bike in 2013).  But it does show well, we have won two first place finishes (one of which included a Caribbean cruse) and several other awards.

The bike is not quite finished.  There are a few additional pieces of chrome to put on and a couple other finishing touches before I can call it complete, but it is getting there.

The paint and some of the custom parts was done by Hardcore Choppers of Sterling Virginia.  Some of the major items on the bike are:

NO… You cannot have the new limted… you get coal!

Frederick Harley Davidson had a “VIP RSVP Only Shopping Night” last Wednesday.  Debbie and I decided to attend as we had a few Christmas gifts to purchase.  Now don’t get me wrong, we know that this is just another tool to get us in the door, but free beer and meatballs!!!!

We got there a bit after six and there was already a sizable crowd looking at the bikes and the merchandise. After dropping our names into the door prize box we wondered around for a bit, I was trying to get Deb to give me some gift ideas for her… no dice.

After buying a few items (I am getting CHROME for Christmas!) and missing out on the door prizes we decided to call it an evening and head home.
