Café Racer TV

I just got around to watching the first two episodes of the new Café Racer. I love my DVR

I have to say I really like the new format. So far, they show two bike builds each week and they have been good.  In the second show, build number one was putting a modern Kawasaki Ninja engine into a Classic Honda CB750 frame.  Build two was the taking parts of a Harley Davidson Aermacchi and creating a café bike.  Both turned out fantastic!

If I had one complaint, and I really don’t, I would like to know how long it took to assemble the bikes, was it a week, a month, months?

…. the Task Force’s presentation to the CDC in October 2013 “links the adoption of universal helmet-use laws to a potential reduction in motorcycle riding, which would help meet the CDC’s goal to reduce injuries and fatalities”….

I am so happy that the AMA is jumping in this issue! They have sent a letter to the CDC asking for meeting to discuss the issue. As I noted in earlier posts (here, here, and here), it is my opinion that this is the first strike to make motorcycling a bad health choice just like cigarettes, soda and trans fats.

The AMA has created a FAQ that attempts to inform us of what they are concerned regarding this issue.

As a community we need to make sure that motorcycling stays out of the health care debate. Please contact your congressional representatives (202-224-3121) and ask them to keep the CDC out of motorcycle safety issues. Airodynamics as Art

They say that art is in the eye of the beholder, will I behold art.

This was a small picture on page 65 of the current issue (# 23) of HOG magazine (the scan does not do it justice).  The moment I saw it I began searching the web for this or similar photos, I did not find anything as nice as this.

Harley Davidson, if you were to offer framed versions of this for sell I think you would get a few takers. HOG how about making this available as a wallpaper for our computers/laptops/tablets.

DOT Approved? Not likely.

I just ran across another congressman who has sent a letter to the CDC (back in September, obviously I got to this late).

Congressmen Tom Petri of Wisconsin has written the CDC telling them to stay out of motorcycle safety issues and to focus on their mission of disease prevention. The congressmen said this:

“Given the demands on your budget and the unique ability of the CDC to address such pressing issues as heart disease, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and a host of other conditions and issues, which afflict millions of Americans and others around the globe, we encourage you to direct your attention and resources to areas that are not currently already being addressed elsewhere in the government.”

ABATE of Wisconsin and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation is working with the congressmen, who is apparently a motorcycle fan, on this and other biking related issues.

As I mentioned in my other posts about this issue, allowing the government to label any part of motorcycling a health cost risk is to open the door to the elimination of what we love. I am personally in favor of helmets, and think we should all use them but using the new health care laws will, eventually, slowly, eliminate motorcycles “for the safety of the children”.

Make sure you contact your congressmen about making the CDC stay out of transportation issues! You can call your representatives by calling the US Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.

Rideapart.com Weird Motorcycles!

Following up on my post about odd bikes now we have weird motorcycles. Ridesapart.com posted an article that has six new candidates for the WTF award. My “favorite” from their list is the one displayed above. If you follow the link to their webpage make sure you look at the comments, fellow readers have posted several more weird motorcycles for your consideration.

I have had a couple posts lately regarding the Star Bolt and the customization of that bike, so I thought I should post something about how people are customizing the original.   I looked at several custom “Sporties” but I settled on this one.

The “Lumberjack” by French builder Comete Motorcycles is a mean looking Sportster.  Setup for off-road use, the bike has multiple custom parts, all of which you can buy from Comete Motorcycles, to build your own Lumberjack but it looks like you will need to supply the chainsaw!

To help promote its new Bolt Star put together a contest between custom bike shops and used social media to find a winner. They sent bikes to 10 shops for the competition which was won by Doc’s Chops.

I readily admit that the custom bikes that the shops put out are very cool. Take a look at results of the competition here.

Harley Davidson in China (from "The Alantic")

Harley Davidson in China (from “The Alantic”)

I read an interesting article from the online version of “The Atlantic” regarding Harley Davidson motorcycle riding in China. The article was written around the 5th Annual Harley Davidson National Rally. But, beyond the cool photography, the things that struck me most were:

Harley’s are HEAVELY taxed!
Harley’s are categorized with horses, bicycles and electric bikes!
Harley’s cannot be ridden on highways and major avenues!
Harley riders in China are the same as Harley riders around the globe!

Well I have called my bike a steel horse, but really, not riding on highways that has to suck.

Debbie and I rode to Waugh Harley Davidson in Orange, VA to participate in their 21st Annual “Big Damn Bike Show”! The ride to the dealership was nearly eighty miles and about ninety minutes long, passing through some of Virginia’s best farm and country land. Getting to and from the show we traveled on the James Madison Highway, the 29th Infantry Division Memorial Highway, the Seminole Trail, and the Zachary Tyler Highway.

We entered our bike, along with about 300 or so other bikes, into the show. There were another 600 to 1000 additional bikes lining the streets around the dealership which made this a bike watchers paradise. Waugh Harley Davidson, it turns out, has its own attached park called “Legends Park”, because of the tents erected in front of it I could not get a good picture of the park sign. The HOG (Harley Owners Group) club for this dealership has a sweet setup!

In addition to the bike show there were more than a dozen vendors and displays, including the ever present bikini bike wash! One of the more interesting displays was by a limo company; they had a stretched Harley Davidson Ford F250 Pickup with bubble bath in the truck bed.  It was quite amusing each time a bunch of soap bubble would come floating across the park.

Musical entertainment was provided by the Zen Daddy band.  They covered most of the hits from the 80’s, 90’s, and the 00’s (is 00 the right way to do that?).  Debbie and I thought the band did a fine job.  Mr. Waugh himself came out and played a couple tunes on the harmonica, for “older” gentlemen I was quite impressed with this talent and lung capacity.  If you have time take a look at Waugh’s Facebook page for more pics and videos of the event.

Our bike finished second in our class and after looking at the winner I have some clear directions on what do for next time.  Of course that means more chrome!
