The National Insurance Crime Bureau reports, that in 2012, there was a small drop in motorcycle thefts….only 46,000 bikes were stolen.
California, Florida and Texas led in thefts per state but New York City, Las Vegas and San Diego were the worst overall. Honda was the most stolen bike followed by Suzuki. So if you ride a Honda in New York City….lock it up! 😉
Another item of good news is that if your Honda in NYC is stolen the chance for recovery has increased. In 2011 only 37% of stolen motorcycles were recovered, in 2012 that increased to 39%! See the full article here
As I have mentioned before, Fox News must have a motorcyclists/biker on their web staff. They have published an interesting but misnamed article regarding why auto drivers do not see motorcycles.
Titled Insurance Tips the article on the Fox Business website is really about how Texas Tech University psychologists studying how the human brain perceives objects, their size and motion in relation to time to impact. The long story short is that because bikes are smaller our brains misjudge what is happening thus causing accidents.
A bit of a read but worth it in understanding if, when we are on our bikes, we are optical illusions or human miscalculations.
I do not normally look at the “Search Engine Terms” stats of the blog, but I did over the weekend. Looking at that stat I noticed I have received more than a few searches looking for the status of the show Philly Throttle. The typical search term was “has Philly Throttle been cancelled?” or something similar. Based on those inquires, I looked around a bit myself and, as I noted in this post, found no updates on the shows status.
During my “look around” I found a link on the Discovery Channels webpage for “Viewer Relations”. I jumped in that rabbit hole and ended up making the following comment/question:
“First, THANK YOU for all the motorcycle related programing! Your network has done wonders for the motorcycling world. I run a motorcycle related blog (ijustwant2ride.wordpress.com) on which I occasionally comment on and review motorcycle related TV.
I wrote a piece about your show Philly Throttle earlier in the year and I have received more than a few pokes about the status of the show. Can you tell me if Philly Throttle has been renewed or cancelled? If it has been renewed is there a time schedule for airing the new season?
Thanks in advance
Warren Massey”
After posting the comment/question, their conformation screen stated that they attempt to respond within one week of receiving the inquire. So here’s hoping we will get an answer to the question soon!
Apparently Harley is still having issues with 2014 clutches.
In addition to the issues recalled earlier in the year (see this post) the Motor Company has issued recalls for 2,886 of its 2014 Trike (FLHTCUTG), CVO Breakout (FXSBE), and CVO Softail Deluxe (FLSTNSE) motorcycles due to being assembled with incorrect clutch plates.
Harley says “if the clutch does not disengage, the rider may have difficulty slowing or stopping the motorcycle, increasing the risk of a crash”.
If you have one of these bikes please contact your local dealer or 1-800-258-2464.
This past weekend I attended the Hardcore Choppers Christmas Party. Alfredo (the owner) had transformed his garage into the party space for the evening. He had setup a display area for some of his custom bikes, an area for the “casino games”, and put the bar and bands in the back.
Alfredo had three bands, all of which were good. Debbie could not come to the party so I brought my buddy Ron (he is not as good looking as Deb). We played the games, listened to the bands, drank the free drinks, and generally had a great time. If you are in the Northern Virginia you should stop by and visit Hardcore Choppers and check out Alfredo and crew!
A really nice commercial that shows off their York, PA factory. I have been to that factory for an open house and it was as clean then as it was in the commercial.
I just ran across this show on The Destination America channel (part of the Discovery Network). Their anthology series Hidden in America “travels behind the veil of secrecy to explore a members-only world.” In their first season Hidden in America examined the Mongols MC.
The original airing of the show as in December 2012 I saw a rerun a few weeks ago, I really like my DVR. Overall I think the show portrayed the Mongols as they are, 1%er’s. It did focus a lot of air time on the Las Vegas shootout between the Mongols and their rivals the Hells Angels, but that is to be expected due to the dramatic surveillance footage of the actual event.
If you want to see the show, search your TV or download it from Amazon.
I give this a 3 out of 5, if you are stuck inside and want a background knowledge of the Mongols this will do it for you.
Frederick Harley Davidson had a “VIP RSVP Only Shopping Night” last Wednesday. Debbie and I decided to attend as we had a few Christmas gifts to purchase. Now don’t get me wrong, we know that this is just another tool to get us in the door, but free beer and meatballs!!!!
We got there a bit after six and there was already a sizable crowd looking at the bikes and the merchandise. After dropping our names into the door prize box we wondered around for a bit, I was trying to get Deb to give me some gift ideas for her… no dice.
After buying a few items (I am getting CHROME for Christmas!) and missing out on the door prizes we decided to call it an evening and head home.
In West Virginia it is illegal to use additional LED lights while riding. Bob Cunningham, who lives in Martinsburg, WV, did not know that either until a State Trooper pulled him over and handed him a ticket. But that traffic stop set Cunningham on a mission to change the law.
First, Mr. Cunningham gathered more than 1,000 signatures on a petition supporting the change and then he enlisted his State Delegate John Overington in the cause. He convinced Mr. Overington of the safety enhancements that come from the auxiliary lighting and gave him a battery operated example of the LED lights that Overington could use in support of a bill to allow the lights.
Long story short, Delegate Overington pushed for the bills approval and it passed the House of Delegates but ran out of time in the State Senate. Mr. Overington is going to reintroduce the bill in the next session of the WV legislature and work with the Transportation Committee to get the bill into consideration faster.
