Back in December 2022, I posted my initial review of the Bilt Iron Workers Kevlar motorcycle riding pants. At the time, I gave them a 5-star rating. After four years of regular motorcycle riding, commuting, touring, and everyday use, here is my long-term review: what still works, what has worn out, and whether I would buy another pair.
Quick Review: Are the Bilt Iron Workers Pants Still Worth It?
Yes. The Bilt Iron Workers pants have held up well overall. They are still comfortable, still easy to wear on the bike, and still my normal go-to riding pants. That said, four years of use has brought some expected wear and tear, especially fading, Velcro wear, and one issue with a hip armor pocket strap.
Long-Term Comfort and Fit
I still like the Bilt Iron Workers pants. After years of riding, they have become more comfortable. They feel broken-in without feeling worn out, and I continue to grab them first when I am heading out for a ride.
Pros and Cons After 4 Years
Pros
- D3O armor makes the knee and hip protection easier to insert and remove compared with older, bulkier armor.
- The pants have become more comfortable over time.
- They still work well as everyday motorcycle riding pants.
- They remain a practical option for riders who want protective pants that do not look overly technical.
Cons
- The color has faded over time.
- The Velcro on the cargo pockets has begun to come loose.
- One of the hip armor pockets retaining straps has detached.
- The pants show normal wear from years of regular motorcycle use.
Durability: What Has Worn Out?
The biggest durability issue is cosmetic: the color has faded more than I would have liked. In the initial review I stated that the pants were more brown than khaki, now they are khaki. The Velcro issue is more functional, but it has not stopped me from using the pants. The detached hip armor pocket strap is annoying, but it is also the kind of wear I would expect after several years of regular riding. Overall, the pants have held up well for long-term motorcycle use.
Final Verdict: Would I Buy Them Again?
Yes, I would buy another pair of Bilt Iron Workers pants. Even after four years, I still consider them a solid piece of motorcycle gear. They are comfortable, practical, and protective enough for my regular riding needs. I still maintain my 5-star review, with the caveat that buyers should expect fading and some wear if they use them often.
A Note About Kevlar and Motorcycle Pants
Kevlar does not expire on a calendar date, but its protective value can diminish with time, washing, sunlight, abrasion, and general use. Treat Kevlar motorcycle pants like any other piece of critical riding gear: inspect them periodically, check the seams and armor pockets, and replace them if the protective panels, stitching, or armor retention areas show signs of serious wear or damage.
