Some roads do not need much introduction, and two of the biggest names in Smoky Mountains motorcycle touring are the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. During the Smoky Mountain H.O.G. Rally, we joined a guided ride that linked both into a single day, which made for a good reminder that two famous roads can deliver very different kinds of fun.
Two famous roads, two very different rides
The Tail of the Dragon on US 129 is all about concentration, pace, and corner count. Even in a guided group, it still offered a better rhythm than those painfully slow runs that can happen when traffic stacks up. This was the fourth time we have ridden the Tail, the last was in 2022. The road was in great shape and as we were on it at 10AM on a weekday, traffic was not bad, we were not held up, and I don’t think we were holding anyone up either.
The Cherohala Skyway, by contrast, feels broader, more scenic, and more relaxed. It trades relentless intensity for sweeping views, longer curves, and the kind of mountain riding that encourages you to look around once in a while. It also runs cooler at elevation, it was at least somewhere between 5 and 10 degrees more comfortable then at the base.
A minor crash and a reminder to stay alert
We did have one single-bike crash somewhere behind us on the Skyway. We only realized something had happened when the group compressed and we ended up waiting while everything got sorted out. From what we could tell, neither the rider nor the motorcycle appeared to be seriously damaged, but it was still a useful reminder that even a scenic ride can punish inattention if you let your guard down.
That contrast is exactly why pairing these two roads works so well. One tests your focus and cornering discipline, while the other reminds you why mountain touring can be just as satisfying when the pace eases and the scenery opens up. If you only have one day to ride two of the region’s most famous roads, this is still a hard combination to beat.
