Wow!

When I started this blog, and still today, I just write and post about motorcycle “stuff” that is of interest to me and my wife.  Our rides, stuff we try out, motorcycle themed media are just some of the items we post about.

I never really thought that a lot of folks, beyond family and friends, would be interested in our motorcycling adventures. But, we have over 6500 folks keeping up with blog, way more than I would have ever expected!

Now we have been selected as one of the “Top 100 Motorcycle Blogs To Follow”! To say we were surprised by this selection would be an understatement.  Coming in at #69 means that we still have room to improve!

So what’s next for our motorcycle blog?  Just more of the same, LOL.  But, if you guys have any ideas for what you would like to see just post a comment.

THANK ALL OF YOU THAT FOLLOW THIS BLOG!

The DawgHouse Motorcycle Radio…The #1 Motorcycle Show in the US

On this broadcast we had sooo much motorcycle racing news to cover we actually go long by 15 minutes, bonus time for you LOL!

The only motorcycle news item we cover, in a very quick manner, was that dipwad (not going not say his name) who swerved into a passing motorcycle.  Well this 69 year old asshat got 15 years in prison for his actions….with the way our system works he will be out in less than 7.

To listen to the broadcast click here!

Motorcycle Racing: SUPERCROSS

As we missed a week due to illness we coved both Detroit and St. Louis.  The majority of the conversation was about how Chad Reed became a really stuck it to Ryan Dungy over some innocuous comments.  The DawgHouse consciences is that Reed needs a bigger penalty then he received.

Motorcycle Racing: Flat Track

Again covering two weeks of racing.  But we also delve into the audience numbers, Indian motorcycles domination and how that might just hurt the future of AMA Flat Track.

Motorcycle Racing: World Superbike

Rea, Sykes, Davies or just Rea…. Well until someone can consistently beat Rea this is the Jonathan Rea WBSK series.

Motorcycle Racing: MotoGP

Holy ZARCO!  WOW we discuss just what his statement was in his first MotoGP race. And,

not to be overlooked, how tires played a huge role on the Qatar track.

With the northern hemisphere motorcycle season just starting several tire manufactures are pushing rebates to get your business.  Appears that if you think you need new motorcycle tires this year now is the time to grab them.

If you are a regular reader of this blog you know I am do a long term test of the Pirelli Night Dragon motorcycle tire on my Harley Davidson Ultra Limited (you can read here for the details).  So, I hope, I will not need new tires until next season. But, if you need new shoes for the bike check out the rebate offers.

By the way, I did not see anything that jumped out and stated in the US only, but you should double check to make sure the rebate applies to you.

Pirelli Announces Special 40/20 Promotion for Motorcycle Tire Lineup – MARCH 1ST 2017 – MAY 31st 1017 – get a $40 rebate for street tires and $20 rebate for dirt bike tires.

Metzeler 88 ON THE 888 promotion – purchase ME888 motorcycle tires before APRIL 30th 2017 and submit for the rebate before MAY 31st to get an $88 rebate other tires might gain you $40.

Dunlop motorcycle tire rebates and offers – wow, Dunlop has so many offers going with different expiration dates you need to check it out for yourself.  On-road, off-road, special packages (oil/batteries/brakes/etc.) and tickets to MotoAmerica are a few of the offers.

If you are need new motorcycle tires, now is the time to pick them up and get a little coin back.

motorcycle-helmet-after-accident

Here in North America and in many other parts of the world, our motorcycles are coming out of their winter hibernation.  Along with the all of our riding accessories including helmets.

So what does that mean to you and me, the average motorcycle rider?

It means that you need to perform the safety checks for your motorcycle (tires, brakes, etc.).  You also need to check the condition of your helmets.  Some ideas on checking your motorcycle helmet:

  • Is the shell all in one piece? No cracks or splits?
  • Are the straps and connectors in good shape, no adverse wear or tear?
  • The internal padding is connected and stays in place?
  • Does the rest of the internals look in good operating condition?
  • Make sure that insects/creatures are not living in your helmet, see the photos below!

While your helmet might look clean and shiny it does not mean that it not ready for replacement. Worse yet, a single drop to the ground might be enough to cause you to consider replacement, according to the manufactures.

Here are some industry guidelines regarding your helmet:

  • Helmet manufacturers recommend replacing your helmet every 3 to 5 years, depending on use, to ensure optimal protection.
  • Over time, UV rays, internal adhesive and component aging can deteriorate a helmet’s protective qualities by degrading the interior protection layer.
  • Exposure to gasoline, insect repellent, cleaning fluids, exhaust fumes and excessive heat can degrade helmet materials.
  • If a helmet has been dropped or suffered an impact, it should be replaced immediately.
  • A helmet is designed for only one impact, even a small one. An impact may fracture its outer shell as well as compress the inner liner, neither of which may be visible.

Now it is your head so you need to make the decision, but you should at least check out your lid to make sure there are no major issues.

You can also go to HelmetCheck.Org to get some additional information.

Recently the Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company stated that they were going to introduce 50 new models in 5 years. From my perspective there are now 49 models still on the delivery line now that the “Street Rod” has hit the road.

Ijustwant2 ride.comOver the last few years Harley Davidson has put out a lot of new stuff that appears to have been setting the stage for this 50 models in 5 years effort.  The electric motorcycle prototype “Live Wire” (which I got to test ride), the Street 500/750, the water cooled 104 and Milwaukee 8 engines are what I think are the underpinnings of this 50 models in 5 years push.

So with 49 motorcycle models still to go what can we expect? Harley Davidson has already stated that there is going to be a production electric motorcycle by 2020.  In my mind that would be two additional models, one a variant of the Street line and one a cruiser (maybe based on the Dyna?).  Which gets the 50 models in 5 years down to 47 unknown bikes.

NOW for question.  Just WHAT would you like to see in that list of 50 models in 5 years?  We spoke on that during the show #401 of the DawgHouse Motorcycle Radio show a while back.  One of my ideas would be a true sport touring motorcycle.  Something that would push back on the BMW and Triumph sport touring motorcycles.  Harley Davidson did have a sport touring motorcycle in the past, the FXRT which, seemed to have good reviews.  I just never remember seeing one.

If you were charged to creating one of the 50 models in 5 years what would it be?

Struggling to decide where to ride or tour on your motorcycle in the coming season?  How about the two following websites to help generate some ideas.

The first site is a repeat of one from an earlier post. A few years ago I wrote about a website that could help you plan some cool motorcycle tours.  This site by the Federal Highway Administration (can you believe that the federal government got a website right?) is called the American Byways.  America’s Byways is an interactive, map based, website that will provide you a listing of each of the 150 different roads.  Those roads are comprised of the National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads. You can select the road from a national or state map to see basic information on the road (length, average time to travel the road and historical background) as well as route maps, directions and photos.

The second website to help you pick some motorcycle rides or destinations is “Only in Your State”. With this website you can find some out of the way or quirky places that you may never even heard or read about near your home.  For example, here in Virginia, this website recommends the “Southern Virginia’s Donut Trail Is Everything You’ve Dreamed Of And More”.  So the saying “Ride to eat. Eat to ride” fits in well.

There are a lot of other websites like this out on the ‘ole interwebs.   If you have one that you like to use when it comes to finding a destination for motorcycle ride, tour or destination please share in the comments below!!!

An advertisement for the Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle, an Indian brand.  But, wow, what an advert!   Who would have EVER though I would say sumo and motorcycle in the same sentence.

Most years the wife and I take a long motorcycle trip or tour to somewhere.  Last year we went to New Orleans via the Harley Owners Group Rolling Rally.  The year before we went on a long ride that passed through Myrtle Beach, SC then through the mountains of Tennessee. At other times we have rode the motorcycle to Atlantic City and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

So one would think we would have this the planning process for motorcycle trips and tours down by now.  Well we do, step one we decide on a destination.  This year is being a bit problematic, we really can’t agree on where or what to do.  We have had a dozen ideas but none have really hit a cord.  The northeast, Niagara Falls, Canada, Harley Davidson HQ… who knows.  And that indecision is the peril as I have to schedule vacation and if we what to see anything that requires preplanning time is running short.

I am sure we will do something… I just do not know what yet!

The first really great motorcycle riding weekend of the year and we got to take advantage of it!   It was a bit cool when we started, something just under 50F.  But, Saturday, a little before noon, the sun was out, the temperature was rising, the sky was blue and the motorcycle was calling.

I threw on my chaps, Debbie put on her electric jacket liner and we were ready for a motorcycle ride to the US Marine Corp Museum.  We had not been there before but had seen its structure many, many time.  Anyone who travels north or south on Interstate 95 in the Washington, DC metro area has seen the spire of the museum rising above the tree line.

Iwo Jima flag rising… in Legos!

We rode out, going the long way to avoid the DC highway system, and a couple hours later we were pulling the motorcycle into the parking lot of the museum.  The building itself is quite imposing, it was built to give an artistic representation to the Marines rising the flag on Iwo Jima.

It is quite amazing when you walk into the atrium of the building. Hanging from the ceiling are multiple Marine Corp aircraft from WWII as well as a Harrier jump jet.  The museum itself is well laid out walking you through the founding of the Corp at Tun Tavern through their current deployments in the Middle East.

If you are in the area of Quantico, VA riding your motorcycle or in your car, you should stop a check out this free museum.  It would be worth your time to learn a little more about one part of the American armed services.
