Pro Motorcycle Advocacy: End of motorcycle only checkpoints?
Posted: March 6, 2014 in Motorcycle, Motorcycle advocacy, motorcycle safetyTags: Café Racer, Daytona bike week, Harley, Harley Davidson, Honda, Motorcycle, motorcycle advocacy, motorcycle riders foundation, motorcycle riding, sport bike
Good news but your support is needed to ensure success.
Senators from New Hampshire, West Virginia and Wisconsin have put forward a bill to prohibit the federal government from funding motorcycle only checkpoints! As it stands today the federal government provides a majority of states funds to setup motorcycle only “safety” checkpoints.
As an example Georgia received a $70,000 grant to hold two checkpoints on two major interstates highways that connected with Florida. Does not sound like a big deal until you notice that the checkpoints coincided with the opening and closing of Daytona Bike Week! Wonder how much money Georgia raised in fines and tickets?
So why is this a big deal? From my POV I register by bike with my state annually, I have to pass an annual safety inspection both of which I have to pay money to the state just like cars. But, unlike cars, I am possibly subject to additional investigation and inspection just because I ride a bike. That is not right on many levels.
If you agree that this is an area in which the Federal Government need to stay out of contact your state’s Senators. You can contact them by calling the capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.

Winter Blues…. Thinking about riding!
Posted: January 29, 2014 in Motorcycle news, Motorcycle Rides, motorcycle touringTags: Café Racer, Harley, Harley Davidson, Motorcycle, motorcycle riding, sport bike
OK, the winter “I can’t ride” blahs have set in!
In an attempt to overcome those blahs I started thinking about possible rides for when (or if it seems) it warms again. The problem with long rides is that the wife and I started new jobs so we little vacation time built up, thus we need to stay close to home with weekend rides. I hope we will be able to get a week or so holiday so maybe I will be able to squeeze one, multiday long, trip in.
So here are some of the rides I came up with to lighten my winter blues (in no particular order):
Appalachian Waters Scenic Byway (Route 39)
Appomattox Court House, Virginia
Eastern Continental Divide
Complete the C&O Canal on the Motorcycle
Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum
Home of real John-Boy Walton (more for my wife, HUGE Walton’s fan)
If we are able to get a week or so vacation I think we will try again to go to Niagara Falls. We were going to do that last summer but it did not happen.
OR…. Maybe we will head south and look for that retirement area where it might snow about one every 5-10 years!
Motorcycle LED Lights… Making them legal
Posted: December 6, 2013 in Motorcycle, Motorcycle advocacyTags: Café Racer, Harley, Harley Davidson, LED lighting, Motorcycle, motorcycle riding, motorcycle safety, Sportbike, West Virginia
In West Virginia it is illegal to use additional LED lights while riding. Bob Cunningham, who lives in Martinsburg, WV, did not know that either until a State Trooper pulled him over and handed him a ticket. But that traffic stop set Cunningham on a mission to change the law.
First, Mr. Cunningham gathered more than 1,000 signatures on a petition supporting the change and then he enlisted his State Delegate John Overington in the cause. He convinced Mr. Overington of the safety enhancements that come from the auxiliary lighting and gave him a battery operated example of the LED lights that Overington could use in support of a bill to allow the lights.
Long story short, Delegate Overington pushed for the bills approval and it passed the House of Delegates but ran out of time in the State Senate. Mr. Overington is going to reintroduce the bill in the next session of the WV legislature and work with the Transportation Committee to get the bill into consideration faster.

Motorcycle TV: Cafe Racer New Season Review
Posted: November 30, 2013 in Motorcycle TVTags: café motorcycle, Café Racer, custom motorcycle, Harley, Harley Davidson, HD, HOG, Motorcycle, Motorcycle Ride, motorcycle riding, motorcycling
I just got around to watching the first two episodes of the new Café Racer. I love my DVR
I have to say I really like the new format. So far, they show two bike builds each week and they have been good. In the second show, build number one was putting a modern Kawasaki Ninja engine into a Classic Honda CB750 frame. Build two was the taking parts of a Harley Davidson Aermacchi and creating a café bike. Both turned out fantastic!
If I had one complaint, and I really don’t, I would like to know how long it took to assemble the bikes, was it a week, a month, months?
25,000 Mile Patch

I have a lot more than 25,000 miles on my bikes. Heck, Debbie and I put on nearly 6500 miles on the bikes this year. But I just got around to submitting the paper work for the 25K award to the Harley Owners Group a few weeks ago.
This is the patch that you receive for this milestone. There is a matching pin that you can use as well. So now I have to update my biker/pirate vest! 😉
Motorcycling vs. CDC … I do not have a disease!

Looks like others are taken aback by the CDC and “its helmet study” I mentioned in my last post. Congressman Tim Walberg (Michigan) wrote a letter to the CDC asking several pointed question about the study and its “findings”. A quick web search finds that the AMA, ABATE and others are taking the CDC to task on this issue as well.
If you have not yet dropped a note to your congressman or women now is the time. It is not about helmet laws it is about labeling our activity as a health risk just like cigarettes, soda and Trans fats! If they can label motorcycles as a health risk then higher taxes and heavy restrictions will soon follow.
Top 10 Harley Davidsons
Posted: November 21, 2013 in MotorcycleTags: Harley, Harley Davidson, HD, Heritage softail classic, HOG, Motorcycle, Motorcycle Ride, motorcycle riding, Softail, top 10
Motorcycle.com put together a “Top 10 Harley Davidsons” list by asking people in the industry what they thought were the best bikes. The bikes on their list covered a large swath of Harley history.
Although they did not ask me I will give you my #1 Harley. For me, it is the Heritage Softail Classic. With this bike Harley has encapsulated their historic look with current technology. Styling from the 1940’s, softail replacing ridged, fuel injection, saddlebags and lots of chrome; this is a bike that blends it all together. This bike has been around for a while too, starting production in 1986.
Plus I own one!
Custom Harley Davidson Sportster

I have had a couple posts lately regarding the Star Bolt and the customization of that bike, so I thought I should post something about how people are customizing the original. I looked at several custom “Sporties” but I settled on this one.
The “Lumberjack” by French builder Comete Motorcycles is a mean looking Sportster. Setup for off-road use, the bike has multiple custom parts, all of which you can buy from Comete Motorcycles, to build your own Lumberjack but it looks like you will need to supply the chainsaw!
