Donating Old Motorcycle Helmets to Firefighters and EMS for Training

If you have old motorcycle helmets sitting in the garage, don’t automatically throw them away. A helmet that is too old, damaged, or questionable for riding can still have value as a training tool for local firefighters, EMS crews, and rescue squads. Instead of letting used helmets collect dust, donating them for first responder training can help emergency personnel practice real-world motorcycle crash response.

I recently donated several motorcycle helmets to the Belpre Volunteer Fire Department. Some of the helmets came from my own collection, and Mothman Harley Davidson also provided several helmets to pass along for training use.

Why Donate Old Motorcycle Helmets?

Firefighters and EMS providers train for situations where a rider may be injured while still wearing a helmet. Practicing helmet removal, strap access, stabilization, and patient handling helps them prepare for motorcycle accidents where protecting the rider’s head, neck, and spine matters.

The Belpre crew was happy to receive the helmets and plans to use them in upcoming training sessions. That is a much better ending for an expired motorcycle helmet than leaving it in a closet or sending it straight to the trash.

Before You Donate a Used Motorcycle Helmet

Call your local fire department, EMS station, or rescue squad first and ask whether they accept old motorcycle helmets for training. Let them know the helmets are not intended for riding. If they want the helmets for training, leave the chin straps and hardware in place so the gear better matches what first responders may encounter at a crash scene.

If a department does not need them, you still have other responsible options, including recycling where available, repurposing old helmets as garage art, or disposing of them in a way that keeps unsafe gear from being reused on the road.

This helmet donation idea also fits into the bigger conversation about motorcycle helmet safety, responsible gear disposal, and keeping unsafe helmets from ending up back on the road.
