In this part of my review of the 2014 Ultra Limited I take on the Infotainment System. There has been a lot discussion of this system on many different sources. I am not going to rehash known issues (i.e. GPS only able to handle 9 waypoint), but what I have personally witnessed as either good or bad. The most important thing I have taken away from actual use and reading on other forms/blogs….wait until you hit “Accept” on the screen before starting the motorcycle!

Infotainment system overall: Not the reason for buying the bike but, what I considered at the time, as icing on the cake. A large screen I can very easily read without glasses, and the ability to have input from a media player, phone, radio, XM was very appealing. An internal GPS with the large screen was a good thing as well, it means I did not have to rig another mount to the motorcycle.

Left hand controls

Hand controls – Overall I like the hand controls better than the ’11 model. It is a easier to do things while riding like setting the cruise control while using the throttle. I have “almost” gotten to the point where I can change stations on the radio without looking at all.

One thing that has happened that I cannot figure out how messed up one of the controls. The left hand “joystick” for the first 2500 miles allowed me to move up or down the channels on XM or regular radio by pushing or pulling the stick left or right (volume is still up and down). Some how I have engaged a feature that now only allow me to move between the presets…I liked it better the other way.

Radio – the reception of both AM and FM signals are worse on the ‘14 then on the ’11. Both bikes have/had a stock antenna. I notice quite a few more areas on my commute where the signal is completely lost with the new bike v. the older motorcycle.

XM radio functions – XM Radio: I had it installed when I bought the bike. The reception with the antenna installed in the manner indicated by the instructions is HORROBLE. In a 45 minute daily commute I lose signal for at least 5 minutes (sometimes longer, sometimes shorter depending on traffic conditions). I have lost signal on open road with no overhead coverage on a 4 lane highway. To date I am so disappointed that I have debated, in my head, about asking for a refund.

Anyone considering this option for your bike…take my advice to either reconsider the purchase or have the antenna installed in a different position. I am currently in the process of moving the antenna outside of the fairing to the right of the vent. I will let you know how the reception is after the move.

XM – Traffic: This works as advertised! On a couple of trips, it worked with my GPS to reroute me around traffic. Once on the return trip from the NF charity ride I did with my daughter, it was spot on and saved us at least 30 minutes of sitting in traffic on a hot day with the threat of heavy thunderstorms. On another occasion it provided us with about a 10 mile warring of major construction ahead. This feature seems too good to go!

 

 

XM – Weather: I have only used this a little and I do not have a real opinion on this function yet, except for one item. Really Harley Davidson and XM, really….displaying precipitation as a shade of green while displaying the map/ground as a “slightly” different shade of green, someone did not think that one through. The few times I did use the function it was difficult to discern rain from ground except for areas that had yellow or red levels of weather.

Bluetooth audio/Media Player/Wired Intercom – No problems works like it should.

GPS – there has been many issues with the GPS noted on many different forums. I can concur that this was not a highly polished finished product. I feel we are beta testers for HD rather than customers regarding the GPS. It does its basic job but there much much room for improvement.

In the fifth and final part of my review of the bike I will talk about the item I have found to be the most surprising deficit of the entire motorcycle.

The British motorcycle Ariel Ace is returning to the street. If you watch the BBC version of Top Gear very often you have most likely seen a segment on or heard a discussion around the Ariel track day cars, the host are very keen on the Ariel car.

Ariel is an old name in motorcycling. When they started in 1870 with bicycles they produced their first motorcycle in 1902. They held on until 1951 when BSA bought the brand which continued under BSA until 1967. Like Indian Motorcycles the Ariel name has come and gone a few time until it has reached the current car building company of today. The most famous of the Ariel motorcycles is their “Square 4”, one of which was recently restored on the History Channel’s American Restoration show.

But, until I ran across the fact that they are going to produce motorcycles, I had never connected that the Ariel car company was the namesake of the old Ariel motorcycle manufacturer. According to what I have read this new Ariel bike should pretty hot, it is using the Honda VFR1200 engine. It is not a great surprise because they use Honda engines in their cars as well. With the use of the VFR engine we should expect some nice number once the production machines come out in 2015.

Those production numbers for 2015 look a bit slim, based on reports. It appears that they will be only producing 100-150 bikes each year with prices starting at $36,000. If you want one of these new Ariel motorcycles you had better call them up and get on a list.

As far as appearance goes…. MEH…. Looks like another “naked” bike to me!

Motorcycle Radio…The #1 Motorcycle Show in the US

During the last episode of the DawgHouse Motorcycle Radio (the podcast, #265, is available here) I learned something interesting. Turns out Ken and Phil have been paying for the cost of the show from their pockets the entire time, over 5 years.

The most expensive part of the effort is the bandwidth that folks use to download the show. The web hosting provider charges by bandwidth consumed which limits the show to about 140,000 downloads per month. They (now we?) have been maxing out the available bandwidth on a reoccurring basis.

The price jump from the current level of bandwidth to the next level is insane and in order to improve the show and make it more available to everyone the DawgHouse is looking for some patrons. If enough folks become patrons the DawgHouse it might even add video…although I am not sure if that is a good thing, unless we get hot models to stand behind the hosts!

To help find those patrons the DawgHouse has begun using Patreon.com.. What is Patreon.com you ask,,,,

The DawgHouse is in that awkward position where it needs more listeners in order to get advertising but can’t get the additional listeners without extra funds!

So, the show is remaining free to all but if you want to help take The DawgHouse to the next level please consider becoming “a patron of the arts” (say that with your noise up raised and with a rich person accent)……… well the show is kinda like art, right, in a Jackson Pollock kind of way?

Well the ride dates have passed and as of the time of this post Harley riders have logged just over 13 million miles. Debbie and I contributed 184 miles to the grand total.   Enter your miles here!

When you log your miles you are given a chance to print out a participation certificate.  You can see what it looks like below.  Not really sure what you would do with this document but it is a nice touch by Harley Davidson.

In the past they have, through the HOG organization, offered pins and patches to commemorate the event, not sure if they will this year.

With the advent of an electric Harley Davidson I decided to really think about electric motorcycles.  Yes they have been around for a while, yes Yamaha is looking at some production models as well but, come on, Harley Davidson considering electric motorcycles means we have to take this seriously.

I have been reading a lot more about electric bikes lately, as there have been more than a few articles about this genus of motorcycle.  We have even had a few discussions about electric bikes on the Dawg House Motorcycle Radio Show.  I am not going to cite a bunch of numbers around range or how environmentally friendly/unfriendly the technology is or anything like that.  I understand that it is going to be a long time before I can ride cross country, due to the lack of infrastructure.  I am going to discuss what it would take for me to buy and use an electric motorcycle as a daily rider. 

So, what would it take for me to buy an electric bike?

1. No range anxiety. I need to be able to commute 80 miles round trip at an average of 60-80 MPH, with somewhat significant uphill climbs.  I need to be able to do this with zero worry about range; in fact I need to be able to do this for two days in a row without recharging or worrying if I will make it home.  This means I need a 200+ mile range in the worse of conditions.

2. No modifications to my home. With my home, (or my friends/family home) as the only “filing station” that I would have available, I do not consider it reasonable to be required to install a high capacity circuit in my garage to maximize my charging capability.

3. Charging time consideration.   A refill from empty to full should take no longer than 2 hours, empty to half full should take less than 30 minutes.  That still seems to be a long time but I am giving in to the fact that the technology for rapid charging is not now, nor will be for a long time, anywhere near that of filling a gas tank.

4. Battery life consideration.  Batteries do not live forever; I want the first battery replacement to be included in the price of the bike.  Whether that is 5 years from purchase or 15 years from purchase I do not want to worry about the cost to swap out the battery pack when it becomes necessary.  That first swap has to follow the bike not the owner, if I trade or sell the bike the new owner should not be put at risk for the cost of the new batteries.

5. Charging stations availability. It is unlikely that in my or my children’s life that electric charging station will be as ubiquitous as gas stations.  But, if a major manufacture (Harley, Yamaha) begins selling electric motorcycles then every dealer in their network needs to be a charging station.  Not a great solution but a first step.

6. Compatibility -Is there a standard for charging hardware, software, volts, amps, etc.?  If I am riding a Harley and pull into a Honda dealership will the charging station be compatible?  Are the one off charging stations you see here and there standardized for motorcycles?  If there is not currently compatibility in the electric motorcycle industry it will have to occur before I will consider buying one.

7. Customization consideration – Now this is not a deal breaker issue, but I would like to have the option to change out the appearance of the bike.  New handle bars, saddlebags, grips, mirrors, etc. are things that I and others would like to change to make it their own… just look at my Army bike.

8. Ergo dynamics – I am no longer capable of using a sport bike style seating position for my commute.  Due to age and 25 years of Army life I cannot ride in that position for any significant length of time.  Most, including Harley’s entry, lean more to the sport bike styling and I have no problem with that.  But for me to buy an electric bike it will have to have a cruiser type riding position.   

9. Price – It cannot be more than 10% more expensive than its gas powered equivalent. I am willing to pay a little more upfront if I am able to save quite a bit over the long run. My ROI for fuel savings would have to be less than two years (20,000 miles).

I am sure there are other things for me to consider before buying an electric motorcycle but these are the ones that spring to mind.  Do you have any additional considerations to consider?  J
