Not sure who to credit, but a cool pic.

Unfortunately winter is here in North America, which means I have put one of the motorcycles to bed for the season.  This week our local weathermen are speaking of horrible weather coming this weekend.  Anything from 3 inches to over 30 inches of snow is in the forecast….so who knows!

I put the Army Bike under the cover last weekend after following my “9 Tips” to preparing the motorcycle for winter storage. The blue bike is still “unprepared” for winter but I have hopes for some “warmish” winter days.  Never know when we might be able to sneak in a quickie.

Well the blue bike is not completely unprepared, the tank is full and I put some stabilizer in it to help with condensation/water.  The battery is on a tender and I checked the anit-freeze. So it went through an abbreviated preparation process.

I really do need to look somewhere a little further south…I am ok with 3 seasons of weather…as long as one of the three is not winter.   🙂

Down for the winter!

bat

To make it easier to connect the battery tender to the battery of my 2008 Heritage Classic (The Army Bike) I added a new part to the bike.

Harley has a Battery Charging Extension (part 99821-09) this $14.95 (that’s right not HD (hundred dollar)) product that not only lets me more easily charge or maintain the battery but also flashes a red LED when the battery reaches a level that it requires charging.

To connect my battery tender, before buying this product, I have to remove both seats and attach the clamps to the battery. As often as not the clamps would slip off and the battery fails to maintain charge. This device attaches to the battery and snakes down to the swing arm. I zip tied the business end to the swing arm to keep it in place and looking neat.

Installation was straight forward and it is working as advertised!  I am give it 5 stars as it does what suppose to at a non-HD price.

Of course a picture of my bike would be in the top 9!

If you follow me on Twitter (@IJUSTWANT2RIDE) or Facebook you know I post and retweet a lot of cool motorcycle pics.  At least what I think are cool pictures.

I went through those and picked out the 20 that I liked the best then sliced those down to my favorite nine.  Why 9??… because everyone does 10 and 11 is too many!

It is the same show as before, behind the scenes at the Full Throttle Saloon, with a few differences.

Michael Ballard and Jesse still argue over Jesse’s stunts.  Fajita Mike still gets drunk and in trouble.  Rowdy bikers still get into fights.

This season though, was smashed together with content from the 2014 and 2015 Sturgis rallies.  I think that is because there was not going to be a 2015 series of Full Throttle.

I think that this season of the show was only the result of the “World’s Largest Biker Bar” burning down a couple months after the 2015 Rally. The fact that it is not on its normal home of TrueTV butFull-Throttle-Saloon-Fire-destroys-South-Dakota-biker-bar-known-from-reality-TV-show-534x330 on Destination America (which barely has the show on its website) reinforces my thought about the show.

With three of five shows aired as I type. The primary reason to watch is that you get to meet Michael and Angie’s new baby Emily (and see Angie explode when she finds Jesse selling pictures of Emily, that was funny).  You can also see Jesse ride the zip line while engulfed in flames… which was pretty cool, I mean hot!  J

It will not be until the fifth and final episode of the season when we will get to see what the Ballard’s and Jesse decide regarding the future of the saloon.  The best I can do is three stars, you can tell this was put together on the fly, trying to keep track that some of the show is 2014 and some 2015 is distracting.

I have enjoyed Full Throttle in the past and I hope they bring it back…if they try to rebuild the bar.

Several weeks ago I bought the Kuryakyn Faring Vent Cover and installed it on the bike. Shortly thereafter Harley Davidson came out with color matched covers for the flat black maw.  Had I known that they were coming out with the part I would have waited to get the Daytona Blue cover vice the chrome part. Don’t get me wrong, I like the look of the chrome on the fairing, but I think that the color matched would be better.

A few days ago I bought and installed the  Kuryakyn Tri-Line Gauge Trim.  I have the color matched inner-faring and it looks great but I just thought there was not enough contrast to make it really “POP”.  I looked at the “carbon fiber” insert from Harley but decided that just did not look good next to the blue.

Then I saw Tri-Line Gauge Trim on a Street Glide with a red (crimson?) painted fairing and tank.  Wow, because the chrome reflected the red it looked great to me.  I made the leap of faith that if it worked for a red bike my blue would be even better, LOL.

So following the same routine I used to prep the surface for the fairing vent (see this post) I installed the gauge trim. The photos really don’t do it any justice; in the garage it looks ok.  Out in the sun it look very nice and so far I have not had any issues with reflected sunlight and I ride away from the sun on both my morning and evening commutes.

Kevlar Motorcycle Riding Pants

I was in the market for a new pair of riding pants. I have one pair of Bilt “Iron Worker’s” Kevlar riding pants but camo is not something you can wear everywhere. I know that Kevlar/Aramid pants range from $300 and down, I was looking for something in the under $100 range.

Scanning Amazon I ran across Newfacelook and their line of jeans and cargo pants. The price was right and the reviews were more favorable than not so I decided to give them a chance. I did notice that a lot of the reviews stated that the pants ran small so I ordered a size up. Boy those reviews were right, they run very small. I normally were 36 and I ordered 38s, my best guess is that these are closer to 32s… no way I was getting them on. I had no issues returning the pants.

Even though they did not fit, they did look well made. I took a close look at the seams and how the Kevlar was attached to the pants, based on my impression of the build quality I decided to give them another chance. This time I ordered size 40 (wow) and they fit like a normal size 36, imagine that.

I wore the pants on a bunch of local day rides and then during our 1700 mile motorcycle vacation. I like them, they have held up well in the heat and the rain. They are comfortable and I do not even notice the armor.

I have not had a chance to try out the Kevlar and armor, thank God, but both seem to be of quality, not that I am an expert on either. I “FEEL” that I would have some protection if/when I go down.

Now of course they are not perfect. A couple of the downsides, besides the sizing, they wrinkle to easy and the Velcro for the armor pouches gives me the impression that it might not hold up for the long run, I will have to wait to see on that.

Without testing the protection I have to give the pants 4 out of 5 stars. For the price I really like them enough that I will likely buy another pair.
