Motorcycle TV: Hidden in America, The Mongols Motorcycle Clubs

I just ran across this show on The Destination America channel (part of the Discovery Network). Their anthology series Hidden in America “travels behind the veil of secrecy to explore a members-only world.” In their first season Hidden in America examined the Mongols MC.

Destination America logo 2012The original airing of the show as in December 2012 I saw a rerun a few weeks ago, I really like my DVR. Overall I think the show portrayed the Mongols as they are, 1%er’s. It did focus a lot of air time on the Las Vegas shootout between the Mongols and their rivals the Hells Angels, but that is to be expected due to the dramatic surveillance footage of the actual event.

I give this a 3 out of 5, if you are stuck inside and want a background knowledge of the Mongols this will do it for you.

VIP Shopping at Frederick Harley Davidson

NO… You cannot have the new limted… you get coal!

Frederick Harley Davidson had a “VIP RSVP Only Shopping Night” last Wednesday.  Debbie and I decided to attend as we had a few Christmas gifts to purchase.  Now don’t get me wrong, we know that this is just another tool to get us in the door, but free beer and meatballs!!!!

We got there a bit after six and there was already a sizable crowd looking at the bikes and the merchandise. After dropping our names into the door prize box we wondered around for a bit, I was trying to get Deb to give me some gift ideas for her… no dice.

After buying a few items (I am getting CHROME for Christmas!) and missing out on the door prizes we decided to call it an evening and head home.

Motorcycle LED Lights… Making them legal

In West Virginia it is illegal to use additional LED lights while riding.  Bob Cunningham, who lives in Martinsburg, WV, did not know that either until a State Trooper pulled him over and handed him a ticket.  But that traffic stop set Cunningham on a mission to change the law.

First, Mr. Cunningham gathered more than 1,000 signatures on a petition supporting the change and then he enlisted his State Delegate John Overington in the cause.  He convinced Mr. Overington of the safety enhancements that come from the auxiliary lighting and gave him a battery operated example of the LED lights that Overington could use in support of a bill to allow the lights.

Long story short, Delegate Overington pushed for the bills approval and it passed the House of Delegates but ran out of time in the State Senate.  Mr. Overington is going to reintroduce the bill in the next session of the WV legislature and work with the Transportation Committee to get the bill into consideration faster.

Motorcycle Recall…. BMW K1600 GT/GTL

With nearly 2500 bikes affected BMW is recalling 2012 K1600 GT and K1600 GTL motorcycles for an engine control unit defect that can cause the motorcycles to stall unexpectedly.  Apparently an issue with the software is causing the problem. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) notice that this software issue could cause the engine to stall, and increase the likelihood of a crash.  The notice states

“A calibration threshold within the throttle valve control software has been determined to be overly sensitive. As a result, under certain operating conditions, an implausible signal may be registered within the engine control unit. If this happens, the engine control unit may initiate a ‘fail safe mode’ (i.e. ‘limp home mode,’ engine speed limited to approximately 2,000 rpm). In rare cases, the engine could stall, increasing the risk of a crash,”

Brunswick Vistors Center: C & O Canal Motorcycle Ride

A few weeks ago, just before the temperature dropped (and pretty much stayed) into the 30s (F), I was able to get a late afternoon ride to the Bunswick stop on the C&O.  For background on what I am doing with the C&O please look at this post.

Location – Brunswick Visitors Center 40 West Potomac Street, Brunswick, MD 21716

Mile Marker – 55

Historical Comments –This is all about the history of the C&O Canal.

The visitor center, which is shared with the Brunswick Railroad Museum, has several static displays regarding the canal (in classic National Park Service style), its development and its relation to the town of Brunswick.

Ride to Site – The Visitors Center is located in downtown Brunswick. There is no actual “stop” on the canal.

Amenities – All normal urban amenities are present.

Road Conditions (from main road) – Normal two lane roads.

Railway Situation – If you attempt to ride to the path (not really accessible via your bike) the rail line is on the surface.

Parking Lot Conditions – Typical parking for a small town.

Main Attraction –

My Thoughts – Nice little museum.  Brunswick, MD would make a nice little day trip from Washington DC or the surrounding area. Nice country roads will get you into town from any direction.

After thirty years the HOG has changed its logo.  They ran a poll for a few months and this was the winner.  It was, by the way, the one I voted for.

It is a short documentary of Alex Chanacon’s travel (in India) on the worlds highest road. He is riding a Royal Enfield.

The photography and the editing is just spectacular! I am going to have to get one of these cameras, so I guess the commercial worked.

Motorcycle TV: Cafe Racer New Season Review

Café Racer TV

I just got around to watching the first two episodes of the new Café Racer. I love my DVR

I have to say I really like the new format. So far, they show two bike builds each week and they have been good.  In the second show, build number one was putting a modern Kawasaki Ninja engine into a Classic Honda CB750 frame.  Build two was the taking parts of a Harley Davidson Aermacchi and creating a café bike.  Both turned out fantastic!

If I had one complaint, and I really don’t, I would like to know how long it took to assemble the bikes, was it a week, a month, months?
