I wrote a post earlier (read it here) about how I hoped this was not a “Devils Ride” version of build show. After watching more of the commercials, I still hope this is not a builder version of that show.

After watching the first two episodes of this season I am….disappointed.

After a first season of decent shows I expected a second season of great shows.  I don’t know if they have a new director or producer (I could look that up, but I won’t) but the overall implementation of the show leaves me wanting to go back to last year. 

In the first show Dale was sent to a GPS location to find an old Excelsior.  He had received a hand written note, which looked like a third grader was the author, with directions to the “secret location”.  Along the way Dale grabs a deep pocket friend to pay for the bike, if they can find it.  When they reach the secret location of the bike they find a garage of old parts and Harleys but no Excelsior, then they look in the rafters before “discovering” a door to the other part of the garage.  Each time they enter the rooms for the first time a camera team seems to have magically appeared inside.  In the end they find another third grade level note asking for $80,000 dollars for the bike.  They put the money in a cigar box and leave.  It was a corny as it sounds.

The second episode was not any better.  Here Dale was on the hunt for the long lost “Road Dog”, the largest, ridable motorcycle built.  Except it was not really lost, and shots of Dale peering through holes in a barn wall going “is that it” were almost cartoonish (again the camera team magically gets their firs).  Turns out that a local Harley Davidson dealer had already bought the bike for his dealership (oh, and it started right up).  The story behind the bike is very interesting and watching Dale ride it at the end was worthwhile. 

All in all I am not a big fan of the new product.  I will still watch the show as the content is good but the attempted “made for TV reality show hype” needs to stop as you DO NOT NEED IT.

Same rating as last year 3 out of 5 stars.

Motorcycle TV: What’s In The Barn …. New season tonight.

According to my DVR there are two new episodes of this show starting tonight (June 10th). A check of the Velocity Channel’s website did not indicate that a new season was starting, or I overlooked it.

What is What’s In The Barn… “WHAT’S IN THE BARN? brings viewers on a quest that crisscrosses the U.S. for vintage motorcycles and cars. Wheels Through Time Museum curator Dale Walksler hosts this one-of-a-kind journey through America’s barns where yesterday’s junk becomes automotive Americana that he will bring back to life and sell”

The first two shows (according to DirecTV) are:

A Diamond In Dodge City – Dale is hired to buy an Excelsior but may buy if for himself.

Biker Lore – Dale is on the trail of the largest motorcycle ever built.

I reviewed the show last season and gave it 4 out of 5 stars (you can read that review here).  I would expect that the production values have only went up so it might get to 5 stars this year.  It would be nice if the Velocity Channel would update their website.

The History Channel now has a website for their new series.  The Biker Battleground Phoenix website does not yet have much but, there is a “Sneak Peak” video available.

According to the site the show is about….

“Phoenix, Arizona—where the country’s top motorcycle builders compete day and night. It’s a dog-eat-dog world, where buyers are willing to pay upwards of $150,000 for a fully-customized, one-of-a-kind ride. Biker Battleground Phoenix follows the temperamental and talented bad boys of the bike business. In their world, showcases are for pride and bragging rights, competition is cutthroat and money talks. When egos and passion collide, the aftershocks echo across town.

They don’t follow trends–they set them. No tactic is off limits and no move is too corrupt. From stealing ideas and poaching employees to public bashing on social media, these guys will do whatever it takes to give themselves and their shops the ultimate edge over the rest.”

After reading this I hope this is not a “The Devil’s Ride” show for builders!

Motorcycle TV: #BikerLive Review … #Twitter TV

I have watched the first two episodes of the newest motorcycle show and it’s the same but different.

I addition to voting by twitter you are also watching in twitter mode!  The show is attempting to show you the builds of three teams via for the title of this week’s champion.  Attempting to show three builds plus the lead in and the results is a whorl wind of 140 second clips.  Now to be honest I am sure each shot is more than 140 seconds but man are they short.  You really don’t get to see a lot of the bike during the build and not much of the completed motorcycle. 

I held off my voting during the first week to see the bikes either complete or close to it and missed my chance to vote (I would have voted for Harlot)!  The second week I voted for Backyard Bagger, who lost….maybe I should vote for the team I don’t want to win.

All in all I think it is an OK show, and given some time to work the kinks out, I think it will be a good show.  Just from the 1st to the 2nd show you can see some improvement. By the time they reach the end of the season I think it will be much better and if it returns for a second run I expect great things. If I were to give one recommendation….show the completed bikes a bit more before you close voting!

I am going to give it 4 out 5 stars because I think they will get a lot better as they progress.

#BikerLive – Discovery Channel (which I salute for all its motorcycle related productions) will premier its newest bike series #BikerLive on May 12 at 10PM EST.  It appears from the commercials and the website that it is a “build-off competition” with the twist is that WE get to vote for the winner by tweeting.

“We’ve found the country’s best hometown motorcycle craftsmen.  And their future is riding…. on your tweets.”

Biker Battleground Phoenix – On July 1st the History Channel is introducing us to “Biker Battleground Phoenix”.  Another “build-off” show that this time pits five custom bike ships in the Phoenix area competing for the title of the city’s “best custom bike building business”.

Motorcycle Recall: A Harley Davidson engineer runs out of gas and 9100 US motorcycles are recalled!

Harley Davidson is recalling 2013 and 2014 Breakout and CVO Breakouts. The recall is due to faulty fuel range indicator which is reporting inaccurate information. The bikes can run out of fuel even though the indicator is reporting there is still gas in the tank. Not a good thing if you are on a highway in front of a 10 ton truck!

Harley is reporting that there have been no accidents as a result of this problem and is voluntarily recalling the bikes. They do state there has been 17 warranty claims relating to fuel level inaccuracies.

According to HD there are 18,492 of these bikes worldwide and 9,102 in the United States. Maripat Blankenheim, HD Director of External Communications, stated: “The way we became aware of this was on a test vehicle, One of our current product engineers was on a test bike when it ran it out fuel while it was being tested.”

Apparently the problem is incorrectly calibrated software due to the way the suspension of the Breakout is set. HD states “It investigated and concluded that a suspension difference on the recalled models changed the angle of the fuel tank by approximately three degrees, causing an incorrect fuel-level reading.”

6 ½ Question with Adam Cramer Star of Philly Throttle!

Recently I had a chance to exchange emails with Adam Cramer star of Discovery Channel’s motorcycle show “Philly Throttle and owner of Liberty VintageMotorcycles. I have posted several times (here, here) about him and the show and the legal battle with Discovery. Mr. Cramer had to be coy about the future of the TV show but he did answer some fun questions.

1.  What is the craziest thing you have done on or to a motorcycle?

          I got chased by the cops for 3 hours around center city Philly on my 1965 triumph.  No helmet, not sober and got away by doing a wheelie for 3 blocks before losing the cops by riding up the art museum steps Rocky ran up and riding down a back staircase.

2.  What is the third most important thing in your life?

        Motorcycles, family first, my building second.

3.  What “Guinness” type world record would you like to break?

I’d like to have the wheelie title!  I believe “wheelie king” Doug Domukus is champ now.

4.  What is the longest trip, by motorcycle, that you have taken?

Philly to California to Nevada to Texas to Philly, 8700 miles round trip.

Motorcycle TV: Heirs to the Dare

from discovery channelI am not really sure what to make of this show. I “think” it was a pilot episode that Discovery Channel ran, even though they did not buy the series. This appears to be the only Heirs to the Dare episode.

The show follows three modern daredevils (each inspired by Evil Knievel of course) as they set about their business, well sort of. Of the three there is only one nationally recognized daredevil Bubba Blackwell (my friends and I met Bubba at last year’s Gettysburg Bike Rally and he spoke about this show). The other two are Henry “Pitbull” Rife a Midwest regional All Terrain Vehicle act and the retired, “I want to get back in but the wife is not happy about it”, Super Joe Reed.

The show begins with Pitbull wanting to go to the next level and actually make money for his stunts. He and his one man crew pay a visit to Bubba to talk about the business side of stunt shows on the day that Bubba is going to jump two helicopters. Bubba shares some of his business “secrets” with Henry and then proceeds to successfully jump the choppers (you can see the jump at the Heirs to the Dare link above)

While that is going on Super Joe regales with tails of his daredevil career including video of him jumping three helicopters without a landing ramp, which was impressive. But this quickly turns when his wife discovers that he has bought a bike and demands that he returns it to the dealership. That argument coincides with his discussion of how he wants to jump the Snake River and beat Evil Knievel.

This is where the show pretty much ends, you get the feeling that there was to be more but, unless I have missed it, this was the one and only. I give it three stars because it left us hanging.
