This week on DawgHouse Motorcycle News Rants & Racing show #383 …

10 Awesome roads to ride from around the world!  These are not the normal rehashed and rehashed set of roads (well mostly).  The #4 road on the list is the Iroha-Zaka in Japan which looks just unbelievable. Check out this map view of the road….d1

In an earlier show (DawgHouse 373) I discussed the possibility that motorcycles may not be allowed on the road as to dangerous to the riders. The framework that is working in Europe now is called “Vision Zero”, the Zero is for zero deaths.

Ken now has to admit I might be right!  Recently the US government has introduced a discussion of a version of Vision Zero and guess what was left out of that discussion…. MOTORCYCLES!  The AMA is worried that the reason the Federal Government left out motorcycles from it future planning is that they want to ban motorcycles.

In racing news…. MotoAmerica’s 2017 season schedule is out and there are some new tracks!!!! They have added Pittsburgh International Race Complex and Sonoma Raceway (and Ken again has to admit Warren was right). AND… Phil likes the change!!!!

Grabbing Toes at 70 MPH!! – LOL Zim Killgore posted this to You Tube nearly a year ago but I just ran across it.  Cruising up the highway Commander Zim spots some Halloween socks sticking out the window and decides he should ride his motorcycle close enough to pinch the toes inside the socks.

Moto Guzzi builds a BAD ASS Trike – No really, a tank treaded trike built in the 1960s by Moto Guzzi to climb mountains.  

Retracting Motorcycle License Plate… BUSTED. – A man decides to evade the EZ-Pass toll system on his motorcycle by installing a retracting license plate. 

Stunters shut down Times Square – Ken, of the DawgHouse Motorcycle Radio, has been ranting about these events causing the motorcycle community to have a black eye.  See one happen in Times Square.

This week on the DawgHouse Motorcycle News, Rants & Racing show #382

Phil has a minor rant about … Ghost Rider?!/!?!  Yes he does, Marvel Agents of SHEILD has twisted is nipple becasuse  it is GHOST RIDER not Ghost Driver!  IMHO they hired an actor and then found out he could not ride a motorcycle! It might not be real motorcycle news but it is fun.

Mondial Motorcycles makes a comeback with a scrambler! Ken’s motorcycle news story is about Mondial Motorcycles coming back from the grave.  Neither Phil or I recall ever really hearing about Mondial.  Of course when Ken was riding wheels were still made of stone.

Riding the Isle of Mann TT Course on one wheel. 37 miles on one wheel, gusts up to 40 miles an hour and the course was not closed for the stunt.  This is what Dougie Lampkin had to overcome to do something no one had done before.

AMA Pro Flat Track makes some big changes. Starting with re-branding as American Flat Track.

I have watched 3 episodes of Discovery’s newest motorcycle themed TV show.  As noted in an earlier blog post this is another in the networks “motorcycle builder” TV show history.  For more you can go to the Discovery Channel’s website to find out more. 

Based on the commercials, I did not have a lot of high hopes for the networks newest b2motorcycle TV show.  I expected a late Gen-X or Millennial version of American Chopper.  Motorcycle builds with lots of drama, yelling and some forced “stuff”. 

I was right but,  I was wrong too.  These guys seem to get along and honestly like each other.  I think they would be building motorcycles in the same manner whether or not there was a TV crew hanging around.  Jason Wilson, the part time builder the show revolves around, comes across as a good guy who is trying to become a full time builder … but admits he is a terrible businessman.   

With that said, you would think that this would be just more motorcycle eye-candy TV…and you would be right.  BUT, I have caught myself genuinely smiling while watching the show.  These guys are having fun doing what they are doing and I am having fun watching them do it.  I recommend you set your DVR to record this latest motorcycle TV show. 

I am giving Scared Steel Bikes 4 out of 5 stars.

Pro Flat Track motorcycle racing…tragedies in Santa Rosa. Grand National Championship 2 rider Charlotte Kainz and Kyle McGrane.  From the Pro Flat Track management “Kainz and McGrane were involved in separate racing incidents during last weekend’s AMA Pro Flat Track race in Santa Rosa, Calif. Emergency responders were on the scene within seconds of each incident and the riders were transported to Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa where they succumbed to their injuries.”


JD Beach reacts to the flat track deaths with a scathing FaceBook post about track conditions around the motorcycle racing circuit this year.  Check out his remarks about the AMA Pro Flat Track Grand National Championship here.


Huge news in the Motocross and Supercross racing world. Ken Roczen is now riding Big Red!  That is right Ken and Cole Sealy are now teammates at HRC Honda.  With the first Supercross race towards the end of October this could be a very interesting season!  I bet Fox Sports is looking forward to the new Supercross season!

We also discuss the results from MOTOGP, MOTO2 and MOTO3 crowns a champion.  Moto2 leaders are separated by the thinnest of margins and Marquez continues to roll in a season marked with parity.

Motorcycle Move Review: 21 Days Under the Sky

“My life lives inside me… that is what riding an old Harley teaches you.”  A quote from the movie that is what “Easy Rider would had been if it were a motorcycle documentary.

21-bThe premise of “21 Days Under the Sky” is four friends riding old school Harley Davidson choppers across America and the fun, trouble and adventure they find.  By old school I mean vintage Sportsters, Shovel and Knucklehead motorcycles. Their bikes have small tanks and more then a few break downs during their cross-country trip. This film interspaces vintage pictures and film clips from the 1960-70s with the travels and troubles of these friends as they ride US Route 40.

Broken frames, flat tires, running on empty and the age of their motorcycles plague 21-cthe riders.  But they also have some great times along the way.  Deviating from their planed route they stop by the Bonneville Salt Flats only to find it under a few inches of water.  They don’t allow the water to dampen the fun and the ensuing frolic makes for some beautiful and fun photography.

I have to say I loved the cinema photography of 21 Days Under the Sky.  But that was offset by the pretentious of the narration. While much of the movie’s narration was perfectly fine there was just enough ostentatious, almost pompous, sections of the script to gag a goat.

At 70 minutes the movie highly compresses their 21 day trip from San Francisco to New York City.  If you do the math they really did not ride that far each day, unless you count the time and distance they had to make up for each problem that put them to full stop. It would be very interesting to see what was left on the cutting room floor.

Currently on Netflix, 21 Days Under the Sky is worth your time.  Vintage motorcycle, old school choppers, a motorcycle ride across America is a formula for success, right?! I give it 4 out of 5 stars and I will watch it again.  Also, remember that this motorcycle movie claims “The next new thing is just ahead”!

2016 Cannonball Run – All motorcycles are over 100 years old!

This year September 11th, in addition to being a national day of tragedy here in the US, it was also the day the 2016 Motorcycle Cannonball Run leg 2 began in York, PA.  York is only about 90 minutes from my home so it was a no brainer to go and check it out. 

For those of you unfamiliar with this the Cannonball Run it is a timed cross county event of 100 year or older vintage motorcycles.  So this year the run is with motorcycles built before 1917. Starting on

the 10th of September The Cannonball Run is going from Atlantic City to San Diego. If you go to their website you can get a lot more detail, in case you are interested in running the next event in 2018.  

Phil, from the DawgHouse Motorcycle Radio show, and I arose early (3AM for him 4AM for me LOL) in order to be there before the motorcycles began departing. BOY am I glad we went to the event.  We got to see vintage bikes that you might only see in a museum, if ever.  For example, I saw two motorcycles that I had not seen in person before a Shaw and a JAP.   

By 10AM all the bikes that were going to make the start were on the road.  Attrition on this ride is high. In talking to some of the participates we learned that about 90 of these vintage motorcycles departed Atlantic City the day before but nearly 30 were unable to make the time hack in York.  That group included one bike that burned to a crisp shortly after the start.   

ijustwant2ride.comYou can also tell by the pictures below that there is a lot of maintenance that occurs.  One of the motorcycle mechanics said that they begin the preparations for the next day as soon as the bikes are cool enough to touch.  He also said that while the vintage motorcycles in the Cannonball Run might be easy to work on, there is not really that much in spare parts and a lot of creativity is required to keep them running.

It was a wonderful morning walking around looking at these 100+ year old vintage motorcycles and seeing what goes into them to keep them running.  I have a new respect for all those folks that participate in this event!
