Motorcycle | I JUST WANT 2 RIDE!!

We have all heard the rumors that Harley was going to be putting out middleweight (500/750cc) bikes. It is said that Harley would make these bikes in India with the aim to expand in to new global markets.

The latest update to those rumors (published here and here) is that these bikes will be name the “Street 500” and “Street 750” and may be debuted this month at a Milan auto show. For a rumor there is a lot of detail about the bikes so if you have time take a look at the links above.

Point of Rocks – C&O Canal Motorcycle Ride

Location – Point of Rocks

Mile Marker – 48

Historical Comments – Point of Rocks is one of the sites where the B&O Railroad and the C&O Canal fought over the right away as the pass between the river and the cliffs were very narrow. They eventually reached a compromise that also saw a wall erected between the rail line and the canal towpaths so that the mules pulling the barges would not be frightened.

During the Civil War, the town, canal and railroad made tempting targets for the confederates operating in Virginia. The rail station, still in use, was built in 1876. Find out more about this stop at the C&O Canal Trust website.

Ride to Site – This stop on the canal is located just off of and even under US Route 15. The trains at this location run often so be alert for the oncoming locomotives.

Amenities – picnic tables, boat ramp, restrooms, parking. Nearby gas and food.

Road Conditions (from main road) – Paved but with pot holes.

Railway Situation – Ground level

Parking Lot Conditions – Paved.

Main Attraction – Boat ramp, Route 15 bridge for pictures, rail station for pictures, Lock House 28 is available for lodging on the canal but you would have to park the motorcycles about a mile away.

My Thoughts – Great site for pictures and a nice stop when riding in the area.

Motorcycle Safety Research

Virginia Tech (officially Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University) has the Motorcycle Research Group as part of its official research arm. The objective of the Motorcycle Research Group, which was founded in 2007, is “applying the multidisciplinary research capabilities at VTTI to real-world motorcycle riding.”

According to the website they are on their third major safety study. Information on their first study, for the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, was the “Naturalistic Motorcyclist Study is available here.

According to their website, they are looking for riders to participate in the Naturalistic Study as well as their other efforts. If you have spent any time looking at motorcycle safety you know that there are very few actual studies of the subject. The fact that a major university is doing this will, undoubtedly, lead to better laws, techniques and equipment. Take a look at the requirements, listed on their webpage, and if you qualify consider participating.

Motorcycle TV: More Details on the New Season of Café Racer!

As I noted in an earlier post the Velocity Channel’s Café Racer starts in its new season this November. But new details have been released as to what the new season looks like.

For starters the show is now one hour long. Some of the “famous” folk that are highlighted are Jay Leno, Katee Sachoff, Travis Pastrana, Giovani Ribisi to name a few.

But it is still going to highlight builders and makers of the Café Racer.

Apparently you can make a motorcycle out of car parts using rocks in the middle fo the Sahara Desert!

Iron Man MK .002

I missed this news story when it came out but in 1993 Emile Leray crashed his Citroen in the Sahara Desert. Iron Man/MacGyver spent the next twelve days building the “motorcycle” that he rode to safety.

When I saw this story I did not quite think it to be true (but isn’t everything on the inter-web true?). But this article is on multiple new related websites including the New York Daily News.

Whether you are a biker, rider or motorcyclist this apartment complex is for us. Ride a sport bike a cruiser or a touring bike you can fit it here. I can’t read Japanese but the pictures alone make me want to check it out.

Motorcycle TV: CMT Orange County Choppers

Apparently Paul Sr. will be back on TV building and riding motorcycles. County Music Television (CMT) while premier the latest incarnation of Orange County Choppers beginning this November.

I am not sure of the actual start date has their Orange County Choppers website has two different dates listed.On the website, at the top right corner it states the show starts November 16 while the “next airing” box tells us that it begins November 2nd. So “check your local listing” to find out when it will run in your area, but my best guess is the 16th.

CMT describes the show this way:

“Follow the world’s most renowned custom motorcycle manufacturer and its fearless leader, Paul Teutul Sr. with his team as they reach new extremes resulting in mind-blowing bikes and, of course, state-of-the-art drama.”

My prediction is that it will be no different than American Choppers or Sr Verses Jr. I predict that I will watch the dang thing and that I will like it despite not wanting to.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

I have never heard of this motorcycle ride before but I am very intrigued. I ran across the link in while just surfing around and I think I may participate in next year’s event, if there is one.

You get dressed in nice clothes and ride your bike in support of several charities. I like the idea and will be keeping an eye on their website and the local groups Facebook page.

According to their website the event began in 2012 and has now spread to over 100 cities. This year they raised over $250,000 dollars supporting Prostate Cancer Foundations in several countries.
