2014 Harley Davidson FXDL Low Rider

[in your best Scottish accent, aka Mr. Scott from Star Trek] “Cap’n I am given her all I can, but if the engine and frame reach a resonant frequency of 5800 RPMs…the engine could shut down!”

All kidding aside a recall that started in Australia a few weeks ago (and reported on The DawHouse #269) has made it to America.  Apparently it is possible that the engine vibration at 5800 RPMs could cause the ignition switch to move to the ACC position shutting down the motor.  I am sure we all know what could happen if you were doing 80 MPH in the center of a multi-lane highway, just in front of a Tractor Trailer and the engine clicked off….not a pretty picture!

The NHTSA has issued campaign number 14V413000 that affect 3,361 2014.5 Dynas, built between 1/6/2014 and 6/19/2014, in the US (and based on fact that they were recalled in Australia I assume all 2014.5 Dyna motorcycles are affected).

This recall is self-reported by HD.  It first found the problem at the end of March 2014 when a bike turned itself off while on a dynamometer.  Further testing determined that this was a true safety issue and they reported the recall to the NHTSA at the beginning of July.

Motorcycle Radio…The #1 Motorcycle Show in the US

During the last episode of the DawgHouse Motorcycle Radio (the podcast, #265, is available here) I learned something interesting. Turns out Ken and Phil have been paying for the cost of the show from their pockets the entire time, over 5 years.

The most expensive part of the effort is the bandwidth that folks use to download the show. The web hosting provider charges by bandwidth consumed which limits the show to about 140,000 downloads per month. They (now we?) have been maxing out the available bandwidth on a reoccurring basis.

The price jump from the current level of bandwidth to the next level is insane and in order to improve the show and make it more available to everyone the DawgHouse is looking for some patrons. If enough folks become patrons the DawgHouse it might even add video…although I am not sure if that is a good thing, unless we get hot models to stand behind the hosts!

To help find those patrons the DawgHouse has begun using Patreon.com.. What is Patreon.com you ask,,,,

“Founded in May 2013 and based in San Francisco, California, Patreon was created to enable fans to support and engage with the artists and creators they love. Empowering a new generation of creators, Patreon is bringing patronage back to the 21st century.”

The DawgHouse is in that awkward position where it needs more listeners in order to get advertising but can’t get the additional listeners without extra funds!

So, the show is remaining free to all but if you want to help take The DawgHouse to the next level please consider becoming “a patron of the arts” (say that with your noise up raised and with a rich person accent)……… well the show is kinda like art, right, in a Jackson Pollock kind of way?

Victory is recalling 2014 Victory Cross Country, Cross Country Eight Ball, Hammer Eight Ball, High Ball, Jackpot, Judge, Ness Cross Country, Vegas Eight Ball, Vision, Boardwalk, and the 2015 Victory Gunner.  The problem, their engines may seize unexpectedly.

victory logoApparently the crankcases on these bikes were machined to incorrect standards.  A lack of clearance between the crankshaft and the crankcase could cause the engine to seize, which could cause a lack of control and a crash.

OWNERS ARE ADVISED NOT TO RIDE THEIR MOTORCYCLES UNTIL THE REPAIR IS COMPLETED.

In other Victory News:

The 2014 American Victory Rally in Spirit Lake Iowa has been canceled.  According to the press release:

“All of us at Victory are disappointed that we are unable to host the rally this year as we know our riders are passionate about their bikes and the opportunity to connect with each other, the Spirit Lake community and Victory employees at the annual rally,” said Marcy Bosch, committee chair for the American Victory Rally. “We will be transforming our manufacturing lines this summer to keep up with the demands fueled by the continued enthusiasm for Victory logo-victory-riders-association_hdbikes and our other products, which means we won’t be able to free up the facilities and dedicate the resources necessary to support a quality rally. We are grateful to our riders and the Spirit Lake community for their continued support and passion for the Victory brand.”

Wonder how much of the Victory line is being converted to Indian?

BMW Logo 3

If you have a 2013 C600 Sport, C650GT, F700GS, F800GS, F800GS Adventure, F800GT, R1200R and R1200GS you are recalled because BMW said that 100% of the bikes are affected.  Affected by what, a faulty side stand switch.

The recall states “water may enter the side-stand switch preventing the motorcycle from starting or potentially shutting off the motorcycle while it is being ridden.” This may not be a good thing if your scooter shuts down right in front of a big truck!

BMW became aware of the defect in mid-2013 and report that they are unaware of any accidents or deaths due to the faulty switch.  Well at least not until the law firm of “Dewy, Cheatum and How” gets wind of this! Owners may contact BMW at 1-800-831-1117.

UPDATE: As pointed out by others… I forgot to post some information. The recall  is NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V065000.   This LINK should take you to the NHTSA site for the recall if not just use the number for the search.   Sorry for leaving that out

I am sure the switch is here somewhere!

Good news but your support is needed to ensure success.

Senators from New Hampshire, West Virginia and Wisconsin have put forward a bill to prohibit the federal government from funding motorcycle only checkpoints!  As it stands today the federal government provides a majority of states funds to setup motorcycle only “safety” checkpoints.

As an example Georgia received a $70,000 grant to hold two checkpoints on two major interstates highways that connected with Florida.  Does not sound like a big deal until you notice that the checkpoints coincided with the opening and closing of Daytona Bike Week!  Wonder how much money Georgia raised in fines and tickets?

So why is this a big deal?  From my POV I register by bike with my state annually, I have to pass an annual safety inspection both of which I have to pay money to the state just like cars.  But, unlike cars, I am possibly subject to additional investigation and inspection just because I ride a bike.  That is not right on many levels.

If you agree that this is an area in which the Federal Government need to stay out of contact your state’s Senators.  You can contact them by calling the capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.

For more information you can review the Motorcycle Rider Foundation press release here and a news article from the Washington Times here.

Now with the CDC spending money to reduce motorcycling, the HHS spending money to confirm that Americans like pizza.
With the fact that cager’s don’t even think about us! With the lack of perception for what we like to do.

Why not spend some money on public service announcements like this!

AMA, MRF, MSF…. if our government will not create the PSAs, how about stepping up!
